Twenty seconds. That is the entire window a hand soap gets, and it changes how you build the fragrance completely. Everything has to be legible immediately, which is why the bergamot and nutmeg are dosed generously at the top - the whole opening has to land in the time it takes to wash. The other problem is chemical: a surfactant base is alkaline and unkind to citrus, and an olive oil and aloe vera formula is richer than a bare one, which mutes bright materials further still. We compensated upward and accepted slightly less sparkle in exchange for a soap that still smells correct after a year on a shelf. The cypress, cedarwood and vetiver are there for the afterwards - what you notice on your hands ten minutes later, which is the part we actually care about.
